We’re also working on the Powerplay update which is shaping up to be the biggest update so far. We know you’re all excited to learn the details and there will be a big announcement in around three weeks’ time. I can say that it will include a new method of interaction in the galaxy.

As well as the big ticket items we’re also working on smaller, but still important additions and improvements. A major part of this is balancing the different roles further and part of this is expanding the drones system. Collection drones will be added and will prove useful for pirates needing to gather cargo in a hurry and also to improve mining efficiency. Players will also be able to transfer fuel using the fuel transfer drones so players can act as buddy tankers for each other.

The collection drones have two modes of operation. The first is a targeted mode where you select something to collect and fire the drone which then collects the cargo or mining chunk and returns it to the ship – make sure that your cargo door is open! This will consume the drone. There’s also an area collection mode so when fired without a target the drone will collect what it can within a radius before it expires.

Existing Elite: Dangerous owners will be granted Steam keys

Image

When Frontier Developments released Elite: Dangerous for Steam last month, those who had already purchased it via the studio's website loudly expressed their desire to transfer their game to the client. For a while it didn't look like that would ever happen, but now they have confirm that it will.

"Thanks for your patience," the official Elite: Dangerous Twitter account posted last week. "We’ll soon offer Steam keys to anyone who bought Elite: Dangerous from our store."

In a post on the game's official forums, the studio urged future players to purchase the game directly from them, rather than on Steam (Steam takes a cut from all purchases made in its store). Those who do so will also receive a Steam key.

"From May 28 you’ll be able to generate a Steam key from your account page, and we’ll have full instructions right here on the forums closer to the time," the post reads.

"Elite: Dangerous runs on Frontier’s servers, so we’ve been working with Valve to give you a way to seamlessly connect your Steam and existing Frontier accounts in a way that’s easy."

Multiplayer ships coming next year

Image

"Multi-Crew lets you fly in the same ship with friends, which will up the intensity and camaraderie levels of a joint mission even further!" Frontier wrote in an email on Friday. "You’ll be able to share and alternate control of weapons systems, turrets and flight duties to multiply your effectiveness. Even to the extent of piloting a ship-launched fighter and working in combination with the mothership. It’ll be especially useful in some of the very large trading ships coming in season two."

Since players will be walking around and talking with other players on a more personal level, Frontier is adding an avatar creator. Having recognizable faces designed by players opens up a lot of the personal interaction that Elite: Dangerous has been lacking so far. In a close crew, Frontier writes, players can "identify friends with a quick glance across your ship's bridge."

New ships and more changes are coming to Elite: Dangerous next year as part of the new season of DLC. Elite spent the weekend on sale and at the top of the Steam best-seller list, so plenty of new commanders are joining the game as we approach one year since launch.
