GeForce GTX970

Postby Capt Birdshit » Fri Jan 02, 2015 12:13 pm

Just want a couple of bits of advise before i go ahead and order this card. I know Monkey you have ordered one, so it will be interesting to hear your opinion on the card itself; but there are 2 versions you can for the Gigabyte card: The Standard GTX 970 and the GTX 970 G1 (Gaming Edition) which is already overclocked. Would you recommend getting the G1 over the standard?

Standard Edition @ £274.98: http://www.ebuyer.com/667937-gigabyte-g ... 0wf3oc-4gd
G1 Edition @ £288.87: http://www.ebuyer.com/664280-gigabyte-g ... gaming-4gd

Second Question - I currently run a Samsung 32" Tv for my PC running at 1920 x 1080 using 60hz. Obviously having a higher hertz monitor like the one Monkey has purchased would give even more benefit to the card - but am i at a serious disadvantage sticking with my current TV @ 60hz?

I like factory overclocked cards and for only £14 you can't go wrong.

As for the monitor, bear in mind that when you run current games at 1920*1080 you'll no doubt get occasional stutters and some moments when the fps drop below the desired 60fps.
This will just happen far less frequently with the newer beefier card.

To drive a 120hz or 144hz monitor to full potential you'll need a card that's capable of pushing 120fps or 144fps.
Sure, the 970 WILL be able to push those kinds of fps in many game engines but you'll not suffer really if you're only playing at 60fps.

Dont buy it, there shiteeeeeee!...

Lol, mine was out of the box broken... Now the month wait for something I only just got :(

Love my monitor, really needed an upgrade. My old one was years old and needed a replacement. Looked at some 27/28" monitors but would like to go for a 3x 24" setup :) for the sim player in me!

Also note that the 970 is a slot PCi-e 3.0 x16 card but it is compatiable with 2.0 (I've read that at the moment there is not much improvement between 3.0 and 2.0)

Lets hope yours gets sorted pretty swift Monk.

Thanks for the feedback...its a difficult one really, as its alot of money to pay expecially when we've just bought a car, and a wedding coming up this year...but feel like if i want to play games this year, i want to get the most of them graphically and my current card isn't going to give me that...espcially with the Division coming out with i am really excited for.

Need to decide the best option asap i think.

I have a 3D TV and really like 3D movies, when they're done well.

I'd love a 3D monitor to do some 3D gaming!

The 3D Vision kit comes in at about £115 (on top of the price of a new monitor!) so it's quite an investment...

If you're looking for a new monitor try to get one that supports G-Sync. It's a technology that synchronises your monitor's refresh rate with your fps so you get no tearing and smooth frame displays even with a varying fps -- saw it demo'd a few weeks back and it is pretty noticeable on the 120Hz+ displays :)

Indeed, I'd get a G-Synch monitor at the drop of a hat (if I were in the market for a new monitor) but it does add about £150 to the cost.
