Re: Upgrading...

So a month after ordering, the ASUS Strix is still not here and I'm hearing very little to inspire me that it'll be here any time soon. They reckon they hope to clear back orders by the end of July ... :(

So, I switched to the Gigabyte Gaming G1 instead.

It cost me an additional £30 but it means it'll ship today and arrive tomorrow. :)

My current 770 is a Gigabyte and I've been really pleased with it.
It's a little smaller than the ASUS card and I was a bit concerned about fitting the ASUS card in my case.

Judging by all the reviews I've read, the 1080 is plenty fast enough out-the-box and easily overclocks to about 2.1Ghz no matter which brand you buy.

Got the day off tomorrow too. :D

Nice! Yeah I would have definitely considered swapping too, and as you say all the top cards are around the same anyways!

Haha Monkey has it pretty much nailed!

Installation was a breeze. It was the first time I'd opened the case since putting in the replacement CPU about two years ago so I was worried it would be a dust trap. I was pleasantly surprised.

Took out old card and the new card slotted in perfectly, very little size difference.

Powered up and the Gigabyte logo started pulsing different colours. I'm not usually impressed by this kind of thing, but even I had a big grin. Showed the kids and they thought it was awesome!

I have a grille on the side of my case so i can see it pulsing away when it's powered up.

First thing I did was load up Heaven, the benchmarking tool.

I had benchmarked the 770 a few days before and at 2560x1440 with everything on Ultra and Extreme Tessellation, with 2xAA I acheived an daverag of 29fps and a score of 760ish  (if I'm remember correctly)

So with the 1080 I was blown away by how about the demo ran. Instead of the usually skips and stutters it was smooth like silk.

I ended up with an average of about 67fps and a score of about 2100. 8-)

But, ofc it's real-life game play that's important...

I have been playing the Witcher 3 at 1080p and with some settings lowered ... I'd get about 45-50fps.
Now I've upped it to 1440p on Ultra, even with HairWorks enabled, and I'm getting 65-70fps and it looks amazing!

I'll not bore with any more details but I've simply maxxed out every game (even The Division) and easily get 65-70fps (and much higher depending on the game)

Very pleased. :)

OK, I know I said I wouldn't bore you ... but I decided to overclock the 1080 a little just to see what would happen and I ended up running The Heaven benchmark again with an average of 83fps. :o :D 8-)

50% higher performance than the GTX 1080
Will be a foot long (30cm)

I seem to recall a recent conversation about the Titan coming in August.

I called it first!

Perhaps I should sell my 1080 and use the funds to go toward this new card ...

...

... yeah, right!

Finally got around to putting an SSD in.

Picked up a 250GB Samsung 850 Evo for £70.

Currently installing Windows 10... Apparently it only needs about 20GB of drive space so I can put a couple of current games on the SSD too.

I'm thinking an SSD should really help with big open-world games where the world is streamed.
